I overstayed my visa, now there’s a $40 fine I didn’t desire. Apparently if you outstay your welcome by over 2 weeks in Indonesia you can be arrested and imprisoned. That’s a nasty thought, but something I no longer have to worry about.
I’ve left, my time in Java is up. My passport’s stamped and I’m [...]

It’s Thursday evening. We’ve only 4 days left in Indonesia. For the majority of the group that’s it; hometime. For Sarah, Michael and me it’s a countdown to Australia. By Wednesday afternoon we’ll be in Melbourne and I sure as hell can’t wait. Just under a week to go!
The notion that the Indonesia programme is [...]

Too much sun. Greatly underestimated it’s strength. Very ill.
We are silly white bitches!
When I wrote my last journal entry after arriving back from the island of ‘Who the fuck knows where’; I was feeling great. High on the joy of the day. An hour later my back was red, I was cold and shaking and [...]

Let’s skip how fucking horrendously bad my sleep, or lack of it, was last night, and jump to the part of the day when we lay, without interruption, on a tranquil beach of white sand on an uninhabited, quite literally desert island. If there’s a definition of paradise – that was it. We snorkeled among [...]

Too much travelling. Too much long, squashed and excessively uncomfortable carting around to finally reach this bloody island! Was it worth it? Ask me tomorrow when I’m in a better mood.
The 2 hour trip from Ungaran to Jepara, the coastal city where we were to stay the night before catching the morning ferry to Karimun [...]

Another busy week. Quite unbelievably we’ve only a week left of the Indonesian experience, the first stage of my trip. As is often said of holidays when you’re having too much fun – it seems like we’ve been here for months but at the same time it’s passed by so incredibly quickly, right under our [...]

For a country that is famous for producing coffee (Java), they sure as hell don’t know how to serve it. The past 4 days have been non-stop and a lack of any decent source of caffiene has not proved helpful!
After descending from the mountains back into the hot sweat of Central Java, we headed for [...]

What did you do today? I watched the sunrise above the morning mists from atop a volcano at one of the highest points in Java. Seriously!
We woke at 4am and headed off in the morning mountain chill (and it was bloody chilly) to the top of the Dieng Plateau to witness the sky gradually transform [...]

It’s less than 2 weeks since I left England, but already it feels like forever. I’m really settling in to Indonesia.
The first week of the project has been based primarily at the homestay, aside from a few trips out paintballing, to local markets and the Hindu temples at Candi Gedongsongo. We’ve sampled traditional cooking and [...]

My trip has officially begun! My companions for the next 4 weeks have filtered in to the housestay over the past few days. I strain to remember the last time I’ve grown to accomodate a group of people so quickly. It’s not out of desperation for someone to talk to, or my unwitting desire to [...]
